In 'Herinneringen Planten' tast Leonie Gossens aan de hand van het familie archief haar herinneringen aan haar moeders moeder af. Hoeveel weet zij eigenlijk van haar oma op basis van haar eigen herinneringen en wat kan zij zich vooral herinneren door verhalen die zijn verteld? Een tweetal foto's heeft zij gedurende een groot deel van haar leven met zich mee genomen, maar de momenten waarop haar oma is afgebeeld op die foto's kan zij zichzelf niet herinneren. Herinneringen Planten bestaat uit een fotografisch onderzoek, interviews met de moeder van de maker en een poëtische filmische vertaling van de reconstructie van de oude en nieuwe herinneringen aan haar oma. Herinneringen Planten gaat over moeders en dochters, over verbondenheid tussen generaties en overgeerfde gewoontes.

Ooit, als mijn herinnering samen met het lichaam van het meisje zou vergaan, zou ik bij een fotograaf binnen stappen en hem mijn diensten aanbieden of wat dan ook. Ik zijn donkere kamer zou ik het meisje uit het fotopapier tevoorschijn wrijven. Eigenhandig.”

Planting Memories

In 'Planting Memories', I explore my memories of her mother's mother on the basis of the family archive. How much do I actually know about my grandmother based on my own memories and what can I remember mainly through stories that have been told? I have carried two photos with me during a large part of my life, but I cannot remember the moments when my grandmother is depicted in those photos. 

Planting Memories consists of a photographic investigation in different photographic techniques, interviews with my mother and a poetic cinematic translation of the reconstruction of the old and new memories of my grandmother. Memories Plants is about mothers and daughters, about connections between generations, inherited habits and photography. It investigates how images are connected to memories and vise versa.

I choose different photographic techniques to support showing the proces of rediscovering my grandmother's story and adding new memories to the existing images. I had some conversations with my mother, questioning her about her childhood and her memories of growing up in this family. We looked at the photo archive together and she told me the stories that came back to her mind after looking at photos.

In the film that is part of this project, I follow my mother in her own house in her daily routine (during covid times) as she is working in her garden, replanting seeds, working on some needlework or painting and looking at the family photo archive. She digs some plants from her garden ( ‘lelie van dalen’) and I replant these ones at my own garden. And at the same time you can hear her talk about her youth and memories.

For the photographic work I focussed on the mutual habits of my grandmother, my mother and myself as well for the composition of the renewed images: I added materials that work as work as symbols for the memories, and also refer to the habit of re-using things (as a need but also as a mindset; lack of money, sustainability, respecting the environment and creativity).
